What is a Lager

Prost Brewing Company is the only brewer in Colorado that produces German-style lager beers exclusively.

Lagers are “session beers,” known for low-alcohol and high flavor that allows a beer drinker to quaff multiple beers, within a reasonable time period or session without becoming needlessly drunk. They are designed to accompany lunch or dinner with friends or business colleagues.

The short answer about what makes a lager a lager is yeast. Lagers are fermented at cooler temperatures than ales, which limits the fermentation of esters and other fermentation by-products, producing a crisp, clean flavor.

Prost lagers are six-week beers. Technically, one can brew a lager for as little as a week, but we brew ours longer which puts it in contact with as much yeast as possible and removes gasses, oils and impurities your body doesn’t need. The result is award-winning lagers that are enjoyed by people who relish good beer.

Altfränkisches Dunkel Bier

Altfränkisches Dunkel Bier

This is a dark amber lager made in the world famous brewing area around Bamberg, Germany. They are characterized by their smooth malty flavor. The Franconian version differs from the dark lagers of Bavaria by being slightly stronger and drier. Dunkels have a distinctive malty flavor that comes from a special brewing technique called decoction mashing. We are reviving the Altfränkisches Dunkel Bier from the Hümmer Brauerei in Breitengüßbach, the brewery whose brewhouse now resides in Denver, Colorado at Prost Brewing.
